Estrogen Matters: Why Taking Hormones in Menopause Can Improve and Lengthen Women’s Lives — Without Raising the Risk of Breast
by Avrum Bluming & Carol Tavris
In my opinion this is the one book every woman over the age of 40 MUST read. The big media scare that estrogen causes cancer was wrong – in fact not taking estrogen as we age can be VERY bad for a woman’s health. This book MUST be on you nightstand.
The Menopause Brain: New Science Empowers Women to Navigate the Pivotal Transition with Knowledge and Confidence
by Lisa Mosconi, PhD
As we age cognitive decline is a HUGE topic. Estrogen is critical in a woman’s brain as we age. This is an excellent read about how women have specific needs as we get older.
Outlive: The Science and Art of Longevity
by Peter Attia MD, Bill Gifford – contributor
I admit to being a HUGE Peter Attia fan. He is one of the leading experts in the area of longevity. Each chapter is a standalone topic and as such a great reference. I cannot recommend this book enough to anyone interested in quality of life as they age.
The New Menopause: Navigating Your Path Through Hormonal Change with Purpose, Power, and Facts
by Mary Claire Haver MD
Dr. Haver is a board certified OB/GYN with specialty training in both menopause and nutrition. This is a VERY up to date book looking at current data and an excellent overview of menopause as well as all the challenges that a women faces in menopause.
The Obesity Code – Unlocking the Secrets of Weight Loss
by Dr. Jason Fung
So much of what we have been told about nutrition is just plain wrong. The fact that so many of us have been unable to control our weight in this era of high fructose corn syrup in every food and poor advice is case in point. Cribbing from the Amazon write up on this book – “weight gain is driven by hormones, and only by understanding the effects of insulin and insulin resistance can we achieve lasting weight loss.” Read this book!
The Galveston Diet: The Doctor-Developed, Patient-Proven Plan to Burn Fat and Tame Your Hormonal Symptoms
by Mary Claire Haver MD
Mary Claire has earned two books in my top 6! She and I both learned the same mantra while in medical school – that to lose weight we should “eat less and work out more”. From the Amazon write up on this book – “But that standard advice didn’t solve the problems caused by perimenopause and menopause because back then she—and so many other doctors—hadn’t taken into account the physiological factors affecting women.” I highly recommend this book to any woman looking for a meal plan that takes menopause into consideration.
