Estrogen Matters: Why Taking Hormones in Menopause Can Improve and Lengthen Women’s Lives — Without Raising the Risk of Breast

by Avrum Bluming & Carol Tavris

In my opinion this is the one book every woman over the age of 40 MUST read. The big media scare that estrogen causes cancer was wrong – in fact not taking estrogen as we age can be VERY bad for a woman’s health.  This book MUST be on you nightstand.

The Obesity Code – Unlocking the Secrets of Weight Loss

by Dr. Jason Fung

So much of what we have been told about nutrition is just plain wrong. The fact that so many of us have been unable to control our weight in this era of high fructose corn syrup in every food and poor advice is case in point. Cribbing from the Amazon write up on this book – “weight gain is driven by hormones, and only by understanding the effects of insulin and insulin resistance can we achieve lasting weight loss.”  Read this book!

The Galveston Diet: The Doctor-Developed, Patient-Proven Plan to Burn Fat and Tame Your Hormonal Symptoms

by Mary Claire Haver MD

Mary Claire has earned two books in my top 6! She and I both learned the same mantra while in medical school – that to lose weight we should “eat less and work out more”. From the Amazon write up on this book – “But that standard advice didn’t solve the problems caused by perimenopause and menopause because back then she—and so many other doctors—hadn’t taken into account the physiological factors affecting women.”  I highly recommend this book to any woman looking for a meal plan that takes menopause into consideration.
